Multitasking isn't for everyone
In a setting like MIT, it is not surprising to see students multitasking, but to see middle or high shcool students trying to mutlitask successfully is something different. I understand many students can and do multitask; however, not all students can. Students with learnign disabilites or trouble concentrating need to try and maintain as complete a focus as they can in order to reap the most rewards from the knowledge of their teachers. I've seen many college students on their Facebook pages or Googling an item or even streaming a You Tube video while sitting through a lecture. If those students are able to maintain their utmost learning capabilities while performing all these extracurricular activities I feel that's great for them. But, as a future teacher I feel it is important for the young minds that we will be helping to shape, that they try and focus all or as much of their attention on the lesson at hand and then use study hall or library time--not needed for homework or research--to enjoy their extracurricular cyber surfing. In the MIT video, the students remarked that they need to multitask to stay active in the class, stay awake because the class is boring or because they need the extra stimulation. In a middle or high school setting, students who require using a laptop to take better notes or participate in online discussions should focus their energy on those tasks rahter than playing. In a world that is becoming more and more dependent on technology, it is not unusual to see that students are becoming better at multitasking and are even required to be able to do so in the business world, but during an important lesson in the clasroom is not the place to begin trying.

Even though the students thought they were good at multi-tasking the evidence proved that they were not. I found it interesting to see that they could really prove that they weren't as effective.
ReplyDeleteI think you make a good point. As a future teacher, I don't think it's a good idea for students to multitask facebook and a teacher's lectures. At this point in a student's life, they should be focused on excelling at their studies in order to make the world a better place to live in.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think that while students are in the classroom it is important for them to pay attention as best as they can, out of respect for teacher and for their own learning experience as well. If kids are not paying attention to what they are being taught, they will not take anything away from classroom experience.
ReplyDeleteI watched the MIT video but blogged about how Google saved a school. I agree with you Diana, like you said it's MIT students- these are students that are good with numbers, math, science, and technology. Those subjects require multitasking because they are very intricate and have multiple steps to solve say one math equation. From their standpoint multitasking is fine, and necessary, but for our students in middle and high school it is a distraction.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this multi-tasking is generally detrimental to learning. Speaking as the older sister of a High School Senior, I have seen the papers that come from someone who "has to have noise and can watch tv, listen to music, and comment on facebook at the same time as typing an essay." Perhaps some students CAN produce an okay paper while they are doing ten other things, but should it really be a question of if they are capable of having enough focus to pass... or how much BETTER they can do when they ARE focused solely on their work?
